Glossary of Terms

Afference:
this term refers to the volleys of sensory nerve signals that are generated at special receptors (peripheral nerve endings) and that then are being carried up the nervous system pathways towards the spine and higher brain centers. So when you see the word afference - think of nerve signals flowing uphill towards the brain from down below. Afferent signals are what provide the brain with the information it needs to make decisions about, and then properly regulate all of our body's functions. Afferent nerve signals are the driving force behind all movement, body balance and other motor activity.

Proprioception & the Proprioceptive System:
Proprioception is the activity of the body-control system (proprioceptive system).

Just as we have visual, digestive, etc. systems, all of which use special sensing organs as part of a complex regulatory mechanism - we also have a proprioceptive system.

It is a "system" in that it involves a series of special sensory receptors, nervous system tracts, brain control centers, etc. that work as an integrated complex.

The net effect of the operation of this system is to recognize where the body or body parts are in space and then to report same to the brain for purposes of controlling balance and motor activity.
